In a heart-wrenching incident from Rajouri, Jammu & Kashmir, a mother allegedly left her eight-day-old newborn in a dried-up pond under the scorching sun, resulting in the infant’s tragic death. According to police reports, Sharifa Begum committed this heinous act to take revenge on her husband, Mohammed Iqbal, following a domestic dispute.

Incident Details

The police received information on Sunday, 23 June 2024, about the discovery of an infant’s body in a nearly dried-up pond in Kadma Praat village of Sunderbani tehsil. Upon investigating, Sharifa initially accused her husband of the crime. However, it was later revealed that Mohammed Iqbal was in Kashmir at the time of the incident, turning the investigation towards Sharifa.

During interrogation, Sharifa confessed to her crime, admitting she left the baby in the sun as an act of revenge against her husband. The baby succumbed to the heat, hunger, and thirst.

Legal Actions

Sharifa Begum has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including:

– Section 302 (Murder)

– Section 317 (Exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it)

Additionally, provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 are being considered in this case due to the involvement of an infant.
