Bengaluru: In a significant move, the Karnataka High Court has directed the state government to frame a clear protocol for handling cases of minor girls who become pregnant. Acting on this order, the Government of Karnataka has now released a Multi‑Stakeholder Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that is being implemented across the state.
The SOP lays down responsibilities for multiple agencies — including the Child Welfare Committees (CWC), District Child Protection Units (DCPU), police, hospitals, and child care institutions — to ensure that such sensitive cases are dealt with promptly, lawfully, and with due regard to the rights of the child.
The initiative was guided by Swagata Raha, who was appointed Amicus Curiae by the High Court in this matter. Officials say the SOP is expected to reduce confusion among families and institutions when such cases come to light.
Although the SOP is specific to Karnataka, experts believe it can serve as a reference framework for other states. Stakeholders across India are being encouraged to study the document and share it within their districts to strengthen child protection systems.
