Thiruvananthapuram: In a touching moment, the Kerala Child Welfare Committee’s Ammathottil received its 600th child on a rainy Saturday morning. The seven-day-old baby girl, weighing 3.4kg, was warmly welcomed and named Ritu by Women and Child Development Minister Veena George.

Never Harm Your Child: Appeals Minister

Minister George expressed heartfelt gratitude to the anonymous individual who entrusted the newborn to Ammathottil, emphasizing the importance of using safe surrender locations provided by the government for those unable to care for their infants. “I urge parents to never harm their child,” said the Minister, “Instead, entrust the government with their care if you are unable to provide for them.”

Ritu is the 14th child and the fifth girl to be admitted to Ammathottil this year, and the third baby admitted in May. Just a few days earlier, on May 20, another baby girl named Mazha, weighing 3.14kg and approximately three weeks old, was also brought to Ammathottil.

Ammathottil Offers Safe Option to Parents

The Kerala Child Welfare Committee’s initiative, Ammathottil, continues to serve as a critical safe place for newborns across the state. These government-supported cradles are strategically placed in public areas, offering a secure option for parents in distress. The success of Ammathottil in Kerala underscores the need for similar facilities to be established and maintained across the country.

Importance of Safe Surrender Locations

Government cradles like Ammathottil are crucial in preventing unsafe abandonment and infanticide. They offer a compassionate alternative for parents who find themselves in desperate situations. Minister George’s appeal highlights a significant issue: “Do not abandon your baby in unsafe places or conditions. Don’t risk your baby’s life.”

PaaLoNaa’s Role and Appeal

PaaLoNaa, a nationwide campaign dedicated to combating infanticide and unsafe abandonment of newborns, supports the expansion and maintenance of these facilities. PaaLoNaa advocates for the placement of government cradles in every city and more public places. Increased public awareness and support  are vital in ensuring these cradles are well-maintained and accessible.

Call to Action

PaaLoNaa urges the government to enhance the visibility and functionality of these life-saving cradles. By doing so, we can provide a safe start for every child, ensuring their right to life and care. We also call upon the public to support these initiatives and spread awareness about the safe surrender options available.
