In a distressing incident, a newborn baby girl was found partially buried under a pile of sand by the roadside in Damera mandal, Hanamkonda, on Saturday. The infant was discovered in a dire state, buried in sand, unable to breathe or open her eyes, and likely ingesting sand when crying.

The incident came to light when some local women, working on the extension of the National Highway, noticed the baby’s legs protruding from the sand. They immediately informed the police. Responding swiftly, the Damera police arrived at the scene and rescued the baby girl, promptly transferring her to a local hospital for initial treatment.

The baby was first taken to NSR Hospital and later shifted to Warangal’s MGM Hospital. According to the doctors, the child’s condition is stable, and she is now safe.

The Damera police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.

Nationwide Campaign is required to Protect Newborns in India: PaaLoNaa

1. Raise Awareness: Educate communities about the importance of newborn care and the legal consequences of child abandonment. Awareness programs can help reduce the incidents of such distressing acts.

2. Encourage Safe Surrender: Promote safe surrender options where parents can leave their infants anonymously at designated safe places like hospitals and CWC offices without facing legal repercussions.

3. Community Vigilance: Encourage communities to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to child abandonment or abuse. A watchful community can prevent many such incidents.

4. Support Helplines: Make use of child protection helplines such as Childline 1098 and PaaLoNaa 9798454321, to report for newborns in distress. Keep these numbers handy and share them widely.

5. Mental Health Support: Offer mental health support for parents who may be struggling with the responsibilities of a newborn. Counseling and support groups can provide much-needed assistance.

6. Educate on Child Rights: Teach communities about the rights of children and the importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment for their safety, growth and development.

7. Government Schemes: Utilize government schemes that provide financial and healthcare support to families with newborns. Programs like Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) can be very helpful.

By implementing these tips, we can work together to ensure the safety and well-being of every newborn in India. Let’s stand united in our mission to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.

Let us also express our gratitude to the alert woman whose quick action saved the life of this innocent child on Saturday.
